Bedichek-Orman Grants
Funding for Professional Development
Overview
Bedichek-Orman Grants are designated to assist full-time and part-time faculty to fund professional development endeavors such as membership in professional organizations, conference attendance, and workshop participation. Award recipients can be awarded up to $500.
By HCC, For HCC
Bedichek-Orman grants are awarded from the Bedichek-Orman Operating Fund. The Bedichek-Orman Operating Fund is an ongoing program of the HCC Faculty Association in partnership with the HCC Foundation. The fund is truly unique in that faculty and staff help raise funds for professional development by participating in an annual auction as donors, bidders, or both and/or by donating funds to the Bedichek-Orman Operating Fund during the Annual Faculty and Staff Campaign.
Qualifications
Any full-time faculty who have exhausted the $2,000 of professional development funding provided by HCC, and all adjunct faculty are eligible to apply for a Bedichek-Orman Grant within the Academic Calendar Year. See HCC Travel Guidelines, within myHCC, as a source for information. Receipts are required when requesting reimbursement.
Faculty Members who participate in the Annual Bedichek-Orman Auction as a volunteer and donate or purchase items at the auction could be selected as a “Preferred Recipient” in the application process.
If you are awarded a grant and fail to accept the offer after ten business days of being notified, you will forfeit your award and will be ineligible to reapply during the same term.
Deadlines
Bedichek-Orman grant applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Requests for reimbursement must be submitted no later than 10 days after completion of the professional development endeavor. Recipients are required to submit their receipts for reimbursement requests as soon as possible. Receipts are required when requesting reimbursement.
Policies and Procedures
Guidelines for Professional Development Grants
The requested activity must be shown to be of benefit to the professional life of the individual.
A benefit, either directly or indirectly, should also accrue to HCC. This could take the form of improving the individual’s ability to do his or her job in a more successful way, the development of teaching materials, and/or sharing what has been learned with colleagues.
Grant Accountability
Grant recipients must pay out of pocket initially and then request reimbursement. Requests for reimbursement should be made within 10 days of completion of the approved professional development. The procedure for submitting payment requests will be included in the notification email sent to successful applicants. Receipts are required when requesting reimbursement.
Grant recipients will also be required to participate in the Bedichek-Orman Auction event (held the 1st Friday in November) the October following their professional development as a workgroup volunteer and donate or purchase items at the auction.
Disbursement of Grant Funds
Applications must be thorough and complete; no funds shall be disbursed to anyone whose application is incomplete. Disbursement of funds shall be the responsibility of the HCC Foundation upon the recommendation of the Bedichek-Orman Grant Chairperson. Please allow up to 30 days to process.
Great question, Lisa! Let me do some checking and get back to you.
If a person needs to change the details of the conference they are attending (attending a different conference than the one originally thought I was attending), do I need to fill out a new application?
I used to be a regular adjunct instructor teaching classes at the Northwest campus. However, I am still considered an “adjunct” instructor even though I do not set foot on campus because I teach only Dual Credit classes in a classroom of an area independent school district. Am I eligible to apply for the Bedichek-Orman Grant? Thanks.
I want to apply, however Google does not recognize my sbcglobal.net account. Received grant in past and appreciate opportunity to apply again. Should I use hccs email?
Appreciate so much grant for Summer 2017. Used the painting techniques with Art Appreciation students this fall. Hope to receive another grant; really helps with housing and transportation plus tuition and supplies.
Are there limitations on how many times we can apply for the grant in a single semester? For example, If I go to two separate workshops during a single semester (the first costing $100 and second costing $150), can I apply for the grant twice to cover the workshop fees? Thank you!
As memory serves, the limit was one grant every two years. However, the Bedichek Committee may need to weigh in on this.
